Tinnitus Therapy Works When You Take Charge
Yesterday I wrote about tinnitus therapy in this blog, A Different Therapy for Tinnitus, and explained about using my Ear Ringing Relief app for various treatment modes:
a. Play the various tones to identify which sound is your ringing sound in your head/ear. Then you can identify the sound and with the volume adjustment you can demonstrate to your doctor, to your partner or anyone exactly what you are hearing. There is no longer any need to suffer in silence.
b. The ability to hear your own tinnitus sound outside your own head is therapeutic in itself. It is a relief to know that “this is it.”
c. You can play the sound constantly to train your brain/hearing that this is nothing to get stressed about.
d. You can play the sound to get residual inhibition. Play the sound for a minute, stop. See if there is inhibition of the sound. Is the sound absent for a minute or more? Experiment with sound for 2 minutes. How long is the inhibition?
e. Once you practice these periods of inhibition you can practice and have the inhibition last longer.
f. Play your tinnitus sound at a low volume, lower than your own tinnitus. Then lower your own tinnitus sound to match the lower volume app sound.
g. Keep practicing as you make your own sound lower and lower each time.
Whether you do one or all of these treatments, the key is taking charge of your therapy.
Science has shown that no matter what the condition – arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, etc., the patients do much better when they take charge.
Jim takes charge. He takes his pills regularly, makes sure he takes them as directed and does the exercises. Jim is taking charge. Jim gets well.
George keeps missing doses, forgets to do the exercises. He is not taking charge. George doesn’t get well.
An outstanding example of the significance of taking charge is illustrated in the recent publication of the scientific study of using Chantix for smoking cessation.
44% of the persons on Chantix stopped smoking after one year. Considering that these were heavy smokers who had tried everything before, that is considered a good result.
However, 20% of those on placebo, got the same result! Why? Because they took charge, took the pills as recommended and followed the other instructions in order to get well.
What about the 54% of those taking the real pill that didn’t succeed in cessation of smoking? Did they take the pills as directed? Did they follow the suggestions given to them? Did they take charge of their problem? I would estimate that many did not take charge.
In the Ear Ringing Relief app, there are ten actions given to follow daily. Simply following these actions – the measured breathing, the visualization, and the mirror feedback: following these actions is taking charge. Taking charge alters the whole body for the directed therapy.
The American Tinnitus Association estimates that ten million persons suffer from tinnitus. By the act of taking charge of their therapy they can definitely benefit.
The Ear Ringing Relief app is available on iTunes for iPhone. The book, Ringing in the Ear – Tinnitus Relief is on Amazon or at your library.
